Bed transformation

Last June at Parisian Clignancourt antique market I was looking for a bed for my son’s bedroom. There were plenty. But as it often happens, when you look for something particular, it is not there. I had a hard time to find a single size bed. In my two days walking miles and miles at Clignancourt (not that I mind, oh no, not at all!) looking for a bed I only saw two beds that were about the right size.
One of them made its way to Hong Kong.
Here it is still at the dealers shop at the market.

It was made sometime before the WWII. It is in a wonderful condition, has Parisian furniture maker plaque on that speaks of its quality. The only thing that needed to be changed – its upholstery. Besides being old and faded, the silk upholstery was pink color that the young man of mine was protesting against.

I spent endless hours looking for an upholstery fabric for this bed. I had so many ideas! One of them was to have it in chinoiserie fabric. I almost decided, went ahead and bought Chinese Rustic by Schumacher. By the time the fabric arrived, I rethought the upholstery idea. It must be classic elegant style. So, back looking.

The fabric I found this time was a beautiful Italian silk/cotton damask fabric, exactly how I had imagined it.

For the next few days: the usual two-people team on their knees with the bed in the middle of our living room. Depending on the task, either with staple gun or a glue gun in our hands. Endless stops to admire and praise our work.

The custom size mattresses arrived this morning, bed sheets on, mission accomplished.

When the dealer told me the price, I thought it was a good deal.
The other thought was ‘I don’t have any room in my apartment for it.”
Lesson learnt – if you really love it, buy it.
Unfortunately, it is too late for these two.

A few snippets

I wished I could say that everything has found its permanent spot. But the reality is far from it. The chandeliers are in the boxes, the frames either leaning on walls, lying on the table or on the window sill, the bed waiting to be reupholstered.
Here are some of the things that I picked up last June in Provence and Paris. They’ve found their new home and I love them all.

A small vintage marquetry night stand with marble top and bronze decoration that first landed in the kitchen but now is in the right spot.

A beautifully embroidered turn-of-the-century chair. Can someone not admire the colors, pattern and workmanship on it? It is in a very good shape for its age. It’s crazy, but I much prefer to look at it rather than sitting on it.

Antique middle and late XIX c. wooden frames. Aren’t they gorgeous?

It’s all in the details.

And here is the elegant lady – long legs, wearing pink, with pretty bronze details and gold embossed leather top.

The key and the desk …

they got separated, the key is already in Hong Kong and the desk is still in Provence.
But the good news is the desk is about to be packed and shipped to its new home.

From all the things I picked up in France in my recent travels, this pink leggy elegance is the one I love the most.
Now let’s keep fingers crossed it arrives whole and sound.

PS. Thank you to my dear friend for bringing me to the place where I could find this beauty and for the idea to keep the key before it gets lost while shipping.

French bed and sleeping on the floor

Boxes, boxes everywhere. You don’t know how much stuff (junk) you have until it’s moving time.
We had our first night in the new apartment. Everyone was camping on the floor. My son decided that he doesn’t want his old bed and will sleep on a mattress till the right bed comes alone.

We had a bed but could not use it. This is what happens if you buy a dream bed without actually seeing it. I had bought it earlier this year from an antique dealer overseas and it arrived in Hong Kong last April. Knowing that we’ll be moving, we decided not to unpack it till yesterday. That is when we saw that the bed had no proper support for a mattress.

So, this morning I heard from my husband the same thing about buying antiques all over again. I had to remind him though how much he likes the chandeliers. Of course he had no choice but roll up his sleeves and start working. And then I heard him happily singing a tune of one of Sarah Brightman’s song. It definitely made me feel better.
It took him whole day but he did built a very nice support for the mattress and his final words were “I hope you’re not going to buy antique for a while.”
