I’m starting off with a bit of the history that was my life before meeting my husband and moving to the States – life in Ukraine.

My parents liked to entertain. It was always at home. My mom cooked all by herself, it did not matter were there 4 guests or 40. Her every dish was delicious, everyone loved her cooking.
The more time passes the more I treasure those memories. Guests would come all dressed up in their best heels, lipstick and all, men wearing ties. It was always exciting.
The table was set with the best dishes and dinner would last for more than three hours with the table setting changes for tea later on and more often than not, the evening would end with my father playing bayan (a type of chromatic button accordion) and our guests dancing.

Back to the present.
Despite the fact that I’m in a mood for moving to a hopefully-soon-to-be-finished apartment and millions of boxes scattered everywhere in our present apartment, I have decided not to go a restaurant for my birthday dinner but instead to cook it myself for my family.
Since we moved from the States to Hong Kong in 2001, for the seven years after that my mom would fly in from Ukraine at the end of October to stay with us till the next March.

This year it was my third birthday that I didn’t have my mom with us. This dinner was partially in memory of her as the main course I cooked, was her famous beef with prunes.

And so, some of the glitter had to be taken out.

Spending a wonderful evening with the two men, my husband and son, is the best gift I could dream off.

And the fact that there is plenty of left over for the next day is not bad either.

Strolling in Kiev

Beautiful Kiev. Very kind, polite, nice people. A lot of old buildings have been restored or under restoration at the moment. I took a ton of photos yesterday while walking miles and miles in downtown Kiev. It is not easy to choose just a few to share with you in one post. Washingtonian summer / Вашингтонское лето

In two days we’re going to say good bye to the US as we’re going back to Hong Kong. Our stay became one month shorter than planned because we didn’t buy a house here thus no renovation project. The house that we were interested in and had under the contract didn’t work out and we were not lucky (or lucky?) to find another one we liked.

I’ve taken a million of photos around Washington, so here are some of them. Going through the pictures I realize that I was especially drawn to find European style in architecture of the buildings. That is how much I miss Europe. If everything is going to work out as planned, we’ll be heading to Europe next summer and I can hardly wait.
And for now, enjoy some beautiful scenery from the capital of the United States.

Через пару дней наши Вашингтонские каникулы подойдут к концу и мы возвращаемся в Гонконг. Два месяца, проведенных в столице Америки воплотились в 600+ фотографий в моем компьютере. Внизу только несколько из них. “Пролистывая” вашингтонские фотографии, я поняла, что всегда искала европейские черты в архитектуре зданий и конечно те заллы в художественных музеях и галереях которые меня больше всего интересовали, были посвящены работам европейских мастеров.
Если все пойдет по плану, наше следующее лето мы проведем в Европе, путешествуя по нескольким странам. А пока – фото Вашингтона, надеюсь они вам понравятся.

Winter Vacation

My family and I just returned back home from our three-week winter vacation in the US. We visited 3 states New York or New York City for that matter, Florida and Maine. It was so nice to spend about a week in NYC with my older step daughter (she lives in Washington DC area and took a week off work to visit with us), met with old friends in our former neighborhood in Tampa and see my younger step daughter in Portland, Maine. That was the reason why we’ve chosen a ski resort in Maine so we can see her. Unfortunately her school schedule did not allow her to go skiing with us but at least we were able to spend first and last day while in Portland with her.

Although we couldn’t see all we have planed for NYC on a 5-day stay still we visited most of the places from our list. We also saw two Broadway musicals and enjoyed it very much. While in NYC the weather was very cold and we all agree we have to come back in spring or fall to enjoy the city better. But we braved the cold and had our stroll through the Central Park which I think is beautiful even with bare trees.

When we arrive in Tampa it greeted us with its sunshine and blue sky.
We rented a car and drove straight from the airport to Orlando for a two-day stay and returned to St. Pete Beach for the rest of our Florida vacation.

It seemed that the cold followed us from NY to Florida. But it’s winter and we know well enough it might get chilly even in the Sunshine State!

Since we’re thinking of moving back to the States in a year or so we were going to see how we’re feeling about moving back to Florida. Well, I’m still not sure about it.

After 8 days in Florida we flew to Portland, Maine, rented a car and next day drove for about 2 hours to our final destination – a ski resort. We rented a condo in a ski-in ski-out building. It could not be better! We arrived on Sunday so most of the people were leaving, making more room for us on the ski slopes. There were NO lines at the lift on all five days of our stay. My husband did a wonderful logistic job on planning the trip!

Our last vacation day we spent in Portland. I’m in love with Portland’s New England style houses! I feel that somehow I was transferred to a fairy tale scene. I could not get enough looking at the houses through our car window and took millions of pictures!

It was a very good vacation! Now we start thinking about the summer vacation that we can spend all together with the three children and it’s going to be a trip to Hawaii! Now, there I’ll have to finally get to try surfing! So much looking forward to!
But until then I’m back to my ideas and projects, one of which I’ve started and will show it to you next time. Also finishing my blog main page design is going to be on my to-do list in the next few days.

Несколько дней назад мы вернулись домой в Гонконг после трехнедельного отпуска проведенного в Америке. Наше путешествие состояло из трёх частей: Нью Йорк, Флорида и лыжный курорт в штате Мэн. Мэн был выбран потому, что таким образом мы могли увидеться и провести немного времени с младшей дочерью моего мужа, которая учится в университете в Портлэнде. К сожалению ее университетское расписание и расписание университета моего сына в Гонконге не совпадают (что усложняет планирование наших семейных отпусков) и она не смогла провести время с нами на лыжном курорте. Мы провели только наш первый и последний день в Портлэнде вместе с ней.

Первые пять дней нашей поездки – Нью Йорк . Старшая дочь моего мужа (она живет недалеко от Вашингтона) взяла неделю отпуска, чтобы провести ее с нами в Нью Йорке. После длительного перелета, Нью Йорк встретил нас настоящей зимней погодой. Но несмотря на холод, мы посетили много мест, которые были нами запланированы и даже прошлись по Центральному парку! Мы также посмотрели два Бродвейских мюзикла и получили огромное удовольствие!

Конечно в моих планах было посетить пару моих любимых магазинов. Один из них – Sur La Table заполненный качественными товарами для кухни изготовленными в Америке и Европе. Естесственно я не покинула его с пустыми руками. Конечно, моя задача была не забыть что впереди еще несколько перелетов и нужно держать под контролем свои желания. Но я все равно была вполне счастлива с медными формами для вырезки печенья, французским ножом для хлеба Dubost c ручкой из оливкового дерева и достаточно длинной кухонной доской, для резки французких батонов сделанной из дерева вермонтского клёна в стиле деревенского vintage.

Так что на следующее Рождество / Новой Год я буду занята украшением печенья. Остаётся только надеяться что оно получится не хуже чем на фото внизу (фото с одного из моих любимых блогов http://brandoesq.blogspot.com).

Пять дней в Нью Йорке пролетели очень быстро и наша следующая остановка – Флорида. Тампа как всегда встретила нас голубым небом как и полагается Солнечному штату. Мы провели 2 дня в Орландо и остальные 6 дней в Санкт Питерсбурге и несколько раз посетили город где мы жили до перезда в Гонконг, Тампу. Было просто замечательно встретиться со старыми друзьями и нашими соседями в Tampa Palms!

Следующий перелет был Тампа-Атланта-Нью Йорк-Портлэнд в штате Мэн. Я обожаю небольшой и уютный Портлэнд с его домами в ново-английском стиле и чувством как-будто я в сказочном городе. Я сдела миллион фотографий в Портлэнде и по дороге на лыжный курорт. Наша арендная машина была с Флоридскими номерами и мы только сейчас прилетели от туда!

Это был наш еще один замечательный отпуск! Несмотря на прекрасноно проведенное время, мы все скучали по дому и нашему Амао и были готовы к длительному перелету ДОМОЙ.
Прошло всего лишь пару дней после нашего возвращения и мы уже планируем наш следующий отпуск летом. На этот раз – Гаваи! Наконец-то у меня будет возможность попробовать себя в серфинге!

А пока в моих планах закончить дизайн главной страницы моего блога и осуществление новых идей и проектов, один из которых я уже начала и обещаю показать в следующий раз.
