My new Oversized Aubusson Style Pillows

Among so many things I like, cushions are a must. In my opinion, they give a room nice, warm and cozy feel. I really love them and it seems cannot get enough. I make them myself and I buy them.

It doesn’t matter if they sewn out of fabric or a needlepoint work or a tapestry. There are only two requirements – they must be beautiful and well made.

Filled with down and feathers, large, handmade pillows are the most beautiful.

When my pillow arrived from the factory, I loved the Aubusson style roses right away. The factory did a good job on the Aubusson, but not on the way the pillow was assembled. I even avoided looking at it, forget about taking a picture of that very poor workmanship. If I tell you that there was a white color zipper attached, you get the idea.

I knew, I had to take the pillow apart and sew it back together again, but this time using an appropriate color of velvet for backing and of course the zipper.

On my trip to the fabric district I was lucky to find a right color of nice silky to the touch cotton velvet to make the pillow backing. An afternoon of sewing and here is my beautiful over-sized Abusson weave down filled cushion!

… and, as it perfectly goes with the theme of the cushion, some real roses, 70+ pieces of them, petit and in lovely shades, from my visit to the Flower market yesterday.
Enjoy!

Winter bedding – Flannel

IMG_3211

Since the existing bedding would not fit our new (old) bed, there are going to be some bedding sewing projects in the near future.
And as the winter monsoon continues to bring cold weather to Hong Kong, my decision to start with flannel bedding was a natural choice.

I went to the fabric district yesterday and managed to stay focused. Not only I did not buy tons of fabric for projects that I MIGHT start one day but I didn’t change my mind to do all-white bedding. That was not easy, trust me, seeing all those rolls and rolls of beautiful fabric.

After a few hours of sewing this morning, the warm and soft pillowcases and a bed sheet were made and apart from the fact that our apartment had lint everywhere, I was happy with my new bedding.

Did you know that flannel is qualified based on weight, not thread count? The heavier it is, the warmer the sheets. A weight of four ounces is an average quality flannel sheet or pillow case.

Here is my newly made never-want-to-get-out-of-bed softness and with Aesop’s Mirror book I’m reading (love it!) now, I think I might stay in bed for the next couple of cold days.

Treasures from Vanves /

Vintage Marignan fabric I bought at Vanves flea market in Paris last month. Linen/cotton mix.

I’m going to sew two pillow cases with it. The rest of the bed linen will be white including beautifully embroidered french linen bed sheet which I also found at the Vanves.

A story based on the print could be made. Maybe when I have grandchildren we would make one together? I cannot believe I’m typing this, my son is going to be only 20 years old in November and I’m in no hurry to become a grandma either. I just imaging a picture in my head and I think I like it.

Here is the other treasure from Vanves – old French bed sheet embroidered with monogram, large and heavy.

Silk for electronics /

Does your multiple TV cords dangling on the wall bother you? It did me. So I thought of the same idea as for a chandelier chain – silk cord cover.
Before:

IMG_8327

Because our walls are white I sew my cord cover using white satin silk fabric.
Sew a tube out of preferred fabric (I think silk is the best) and thread all the TV cables through it.

After:

I prefer it this way much better.

How to bring Hermes scarf on a voyage

When you need to bring an extra pair of fine shoes on a trip, you use a bag provided in a box. But what about Hermes scarf? I used the same idea and made a bag out of satin silk in Hermes’ orange and chocolate colors.

silk

The silk on the photo above, came from a tiny shop in Hong Kong where they sell remnants of silk of every imaginable shade of every color.

… and here is the orange bag with chocolate brown trimming. I’m thinking of embroidering my monogrammed initials with brown silk thread on it.

I finished the trimming with hand stitched discreet stitch.

Silk bag for Hermes scarf
