Travel diary: Switzerland

Back to blogging on our recent traveling.

After Germany there were a couple days spent in Switzerland. We stayed in Lucerne, visited Lugano – ‘Swiss Monte Carlo’ and went all the way to the top of Mt.Titlis.

When we just arrived in Lucerne we went to see the famous Lion of Lucerne sculpture.

See the outside shape of a pig around the lion? If you would like to know why and more about the sculpture, read the history of the monument here.

With the help of Photovisi.com I created a little collage of my photos of Lucerne.

While visiting Switzerland, most people would check out watch shops. I have little interest for these kind of shops. But, it was hard to pass by an antique shop filled with glittering crystal and bronze chandeliers.

On a beautiful sunny morning we took a boat cruise on lake Lucerne and admired a fairy tale-like scenery.

Next day we were off to the mountains. If you’re ever in Switzerland, the Mt.Titlis (3,238 m high) visit is a must. Breath-taking ride and the breath-taking view!
It is famous as the site of the world’s first revolving cable car. The cable car system connects through three stages. The last part of cable car trip leads above the glacier.
There were plenty of skiers at the end of May on Mt.Titlis!

Before leaving for Italy we stopped in Lugano in the south of Switzerland. Lugano is located in the Italian-speaking canton that borders Italy.

With this image of a lovely idea, potted flowers in a tea cup in a street cafe of Lugano, I said goodbye to Switzerland as we headed off to Italy to travel there for another eight days.

The key and the desk …

they got separated, the key is already in Hong Kong and the desk is still in Provence.
But the good news is the desk is about to be packed and shipped to its new home.

From all the things I picked up in France in my recent travels, this pink leggy elegance is the one I love the most.
Now let’s keep fingers crossed it arrives whole and sound.

PS. Thank you to my dear friend for bringing me to the place where I could find this beauty and for the idea to keep the key before it gets lost while shipping.

Romance In Germany

Beautiful romantic city of Heidelberg that we stopped for a short visit before heading off to Switzerland.

This city has a long history that goes back to the 5th century BC.
Heidelberg is famous for its University of Heidelberg, Heidelberg Castle and the baroque style Old Town.

To me, it has everything I love – cobblestone streets, painted shutters and geranium on the window sills.

Castles (and Riesling) of the Rhine river

Our long European vacation still continues … but things have slowed down a bit since we’re staying in Paris now and not on the road any more. And as I wanted to write a little bit of every city and town in Europe we have visited on this trip, here it goes backwards about three weeks ago …

IMG_6717

The country we visited after Holland was Germany and the highlight of this visit was a Rhine river valley cruise.
The Rhine has more castles along its length than any other river in the world. Every castle has a legend attached to it.

As we cruised along the Rhine we enjoyed the beautiful scenes of the valley’s vineyards. Riesling wine is being produced in this area of Germany. Some believe that the Riesling has a certain similarity with a type of grape described by the Roman writer Plinius (23–79 AD). At the middle Rhine the vine grape variety Riesling is the mostly planted wine grape because the slate soil on the Rhine hills are very suitable for these grapes. We sure didn’t want to miss a chance to try it! I would describe it as elegant, slightly sweet, with its taste reminiscent of peach. Despite drinking wine in the morning, I enjoyed it very much.

Next time I have a glass of Riesling, it will bring me back to this sunny day in Germany on the Rhine river.

Amsterdam

What does come to your mind when you think of ‘Amsterdam’?
Bicycles, tulips, canals, cheese, leaning houses, windmills and some other things we all know about that I’m not going to mention here.

We spent a lovely day walking the streets of Amsterdam, taking a canal cruise, having an alfresco lunch while watching the world walking (or riding a bicycle) by.
The weather was beautiful and I wished we had more time in the city. Hopefully some other time.
And for now … the next stop is Germany.
